Choosing a mattress isn’t as simple as it used to be. Memory foam, latex, coil sprung and pocket sprung mattresses represent just a portion of the options available. But to make your choices more manageable, we thought we’d take a look at the most popular type of mattress – spring technology.
Open Coil Vs Pocket Sprung
There are two main types of spring mattress: open coil and pocket sprung. In terms of comfort, pocket spring mattresses are far superior, but open coil mattresses tend to be less expensive – and here’s why:
Open Coil Mattresses
These ones are made up of individual springs fixed together by one wire. As a result, the springs move as one unit and this means you’re more likely to disturb your partner when moving around during sleep. Because of the design, coils wear out quickly but they’re much cheaper to manufacture – leading to lower prices.
Open coil mattresses tend to be firmer than other forms of mattress, but an accompanying memory foam topper will alleviate some of the pressure and also make the unit more comfortable. We’d recommend buying an open coil mattress if you need an inexpensive single bed, but we’d also suggest replacing this type of mattress after 3-5 years of use.
Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Pocket sprung mattresses are made up of springs that are sewn into individual fabric pockets. This means that each spring reacts independently to the rest of the springs, providing better support across your whole body and also preventing the “roll-together” effect for two sleepers. And according to Which?, pocket sprung mattresses are the most popular among all their readers – which is something to bear in mind.
Spring count is an important factor when choosing a pocket sprung mattress – with a higher spring count usually translating to better support. However, bed brands “count” springs in different ways – so it’s best to test out the mattress and get a good feel for what suits you best.
Pocket spring mattresses tend to last for 7-10 years.
