The term ‘Sleeptember’ was coined by the Sleep Charity to promote and encourage better sleep for everyone. On average, we spend a third of our lives in bed, but 40% of adults and children suffer from sleep issues. We know some of these influences are out of our control, but factors such as temperature control, lighting, and noise can all be altered to contribute to a good night’s sleep.
Having a great night’s sleep is essential for your health and wellbeing. Read our article to understand the physical and mental health benefits of sleep.
Creating your sanctuary
Here are some expert tips for changing your surroundings to improve your sleep.
- Temperature: Temperature has a huge effect on how well we sleep. Temperatures above 24°C are likely to cause you to be restless, while temperatures of 12°C or below will make it difficult to fall asleep. Simple steps such as opening windows for air circulation or using a higher or lower thermostat will help.
- Lighting: We release melatonin when we are asleep in a dark room, which relaxes our bodies and helps us drift off quicker. Therefore, if we have light coming into our room, we struggle to get to sleep and continue to sleep. Purchasing well-lined curtains and blackout blinds will considerably help keep your room darker. Eye masks and avoiding screen time up to an hour before bed will also help.
- Noise: Internal and external noise can really interrupt our sleep, especially when we are in deep sleep. Gadgets such as ‘white noise’ machines have been a popular choice for many who want a soothing, constant sound. More permanent solutions, such as double glazing or carpet instead of hard flooring, are also ideas to drown out the noise.
Another significant element is your bed, duvet, and pillows. The NBF (National Bed Federation) recommends replacing your mattress every 7-8 years.
